1 - Web Dictionary
Term Definition
Browser
A computer program that
allows you to view web pages - offline or online.
Netscape and Internet Explorer are the most popular Internet
browsers.
Buttons
A small outlined area
on a web page that you can click to make something
happen. Buttons are often used to submit information, process
a form, or
any other interactive tool.
Chat
Room Internet-based
program that allows people to communicate live. You can
add
your own chat room to your web site using Bravenet.com free
services.
Community
To create a community
on a web site means to allow people express their
opinions
and share their problems through tools such as forum, chat
room,
newsletter,
discussion lists etc.
Counter
Also known as "hit
counter", it stands for the number of objects requested
by
visitors. Most common objects "counted" are web
pages and images on
it.
A hit counter does not count the number of people coming to
your web
site.
Unique visitor counter does.
Default
If you do not specify a
setting for some object, it automatically assigns a
setting
or a value to it. For example, if you don't specify the width
of a table
on
your web page, it will be automatically assigned
"100%". Or if you don't
specify
the size of a border around your image, it will automatically
put a
border
of size 1.
Directory
A special kind of a
folder that contains files and other folders on a computer
system.
You can organize your web site into several directories, for
example,
by creating a special folder to place all your images in and
putting
all
your text documents in another.
Domain
Name A part of a web
site address. For example, in http://www.helpingfoot.com,
the
domain name is helpingfoot.com.
Domain
Transfer Arranging for
a new host to point to your domain name. You can also askyour
new hosting company to actually host your web site by
transferring all
your
files to their web servers.
Download
To download means to
copy a file - image, computer program, movie - from
remote
computer to your computer. When you purchased this book, you
had
to
download it first to be able to read it.
Download
Time The time it takes
to download a program, a web page or any other computer
file. Download time of your web
page should be under 10 seconds,
otherwise
your visitors will leave without seeing it.
E-commerce
An ability of a web
site to accept and process orders. For helpful information

E-mail
Address Electronic
address that allows people to communicate through the network
of computer systems.
Execute
Perform an action or
"run" a program. Executable programs can be clicked
on
to start performing whatever action they were programmed to
do.
Extension
The end of a filename.
Usually it is the last 3 or 4 letters of a filename that
indicate
what type of file it is. For example, setup.exe tells you that
it is an
executable
file, index.html tells you that it is an Internet page and can
be
viewed
from a browser.
Form
A document that needs
to be filled out. Forms are used on web sites to
allow
visitors submit information, feedback or questions. You can

Forum
A special message board
that allows web site visitors to post their
questions,
answers and suggestions. You can set up your own forum
through
Bravenet.com.
Frames
Frames split a
browser's window in several parts. They are often used to
have
one section of a web site visible at all times, even when you
scroll.
Beginners
should not try to create frames on their web sites, because
they
are
very tricky and can confuse you in no time.
FTP
Stands for File
Transfer Protocol. You will use it to send your files to the
web
server.

Home
Page The first web page
of a web site.
Host
A computer that can be
accessed by a user from a different location. A web
server
is a host where you will store your web site files.
HTML
Short for HyperText
Markup Language, it is a language used to create
documents
for the Web. It uses tags to define property of text, images,
and
documents.

Image
Any graphic used on
your web site - picture, clipart, logo, etc.
Image
Editor A computer
program that allows you to create and modify images. An
example
of image editor is PaintShop Pro and Adobe Photoshop.
Index.html
This should be the name
of your main web site file. If you name it anything
else,
instead of your web page, you will see a list of all files in
your web
directory.
Install
To install a program
means to make it function on your computer and
perform
tasks which it was programmed to perform. Installation usually
requires
executing a program.
Interactive
Tools Features on your
web site that allow visitors enter information, play a game,
answer a question, share an
opinion or do something that is more than just
browsing
it.
Internet
Address See URL.
Internet
Explorer The most
popular Internet browser.
Internet
Service
Provider
A
company that provides access to Internet. It gives you a user
name, a
password
and a phone number to dial. If you have a modem in your
computer
system, you will then be able to access the Internet.

Same as
"start".
Link
Text or graphic that
can be clicked on to get to another Web document. Also
known
as hyperlink.
Mailing
List A list of e-mail
addresses that you can collect by putting a special form on
your
web site. When you send a message to your mailing list,
everyone
receives
it by the click of a "send" button.
Merchant
Account You need to
have a merchant account to be able to accept payments from
your
customers. Many online companies offer you free merchant
accounts
today.
Clickbank.com
and iBill.com are
some of them. However they do
require
a transaction fee when an order is placed.
Modem
A piece of equipment
inside your computer (or attached to it) that allows you
to
dial a phone number and access Internet.
Name
Servers A program that
translates names from one form into another. For example,
the
Internet relies on Domain Name Servers (DNS) that translate
domain
names
into IP addresses.
Navigation
A carefully thought out
menu system that allows people to find documents
on
your web site.

Communicator
A
program package that contains Composer (for designing a web
page), a
Navigator
(for viewing web pages) and other Internet tools.

Password
Protection
Ability
of a web site to restrict access only to those visitors who

password.
It is used for private sites, member-only sites and for

Window A window that
suddenly appears on your screen. It is usually smaller than
other
open windows and wants your immediate attention. Most of the
pop-up
windows today, though, are used to get your attention to an
advertisement.

A
system that allows immediate processing of your online
customers' credit
cards.
Reload
To reload a web page
means to update it to reflect changes. You need to
reload
(or refresh) a web page after you make changes to it and
upload to
your
web server.
Search
Engines A program on
the Internet that searches documents to find a word or a
phrase
you specify. Examples of Search Engines are AltaVista and
WebCrawler.
Secure
Server A web server
that encrypts information and transactions to protect them
from
someone else seeing them and abusing or taking advantage of
such
information.
Shopping
Cart A web page that
allows visitors make online purchases through searching
or
browsing, and submitting payment through a secure system. The
difference
between a shopping cart and other e-commerce systems is that
a
customer can purchase more than one items from your store in
the same
transaction.
Site
Map Table of contents
of a web site. You can use it if you have over 10 pages, to
make
it easy for people to see what your site offers.

Search A special web
tool that your visitors can use to find information or a
product
on

Upload
To upload means to
transfer files from one computer to another. You will
upload
the files you created for your web site, to your web server.
Until you

all the files, your web site will not be accessible from the
Web.
URL
Address of a web site.
URL usually starts with "http://www." Example of a

Hosting Company
A
company that provides a physical location for storing web
sites. Many web
hosting
companies extend their services to free web tools and
utilities.

Page Any document you
see on the Internet, that contains text, images and links

other web pages.

program that allows you to create web pages visually. You can

text, pictures, links, tables and other objects to your web

gives you its address, user name and a password to access it
